I moved to Sechelt, Sunshine Coast BC in 2015 and soon found out it was home to rare glass coral which was believed to be extinct for millions of years. The reefs found in Howe sound are believed to be thousands of years old, and quite rare. The organic forms really inspired me to re create them.
The glass coral is made up of a lattice-like structure composed entirely of silica which makes them incredibly light, and if you look closely its almost lace like in its aesthetic.
I decided to try and replicate the glass coral in stitched sculpture. I wanted the option to dye it so its made entirely from silk thread. The lattice lace structure can’t be achieved in stitched thread, as I need many layers to add strength, so I added a final layer of lattice embroidery in an embossed effect, its subtle, just like the coral, adding a light to the vessel helps highlight the lattice lace.
Its made from approx. 40,000 metres of silk thread, no seams or darts and hand dyed. Its approx. 8” tall and 4” in diameter
