I’m often envious and inspired by Ceramicists, felter’s and wood carvers who can all create 3D forms completely seamless. In fabric seams and darts are needed to built in which changes the aesthetics. So having created small 3D stitched thread sculptures for some time I decided to take the plunge and see if I could create a large shaped bowl, made entirely from stitched thread, no seams or darts.
Working with stitch tension and stitch direction I was able to make an 8” diameter by 4” high bowl. It took almost 3500m of thread and a lot of stitches!
