Words in White, I looked at anagrams of the word White. There is only one, noun; withe; a tough flexible branch of an osier or other willow, used for tying, binding or basketry
But many 2, 3 and 4 letter words can be made from the word white.
So, it seemed obvious to make an embroidered branch with a word puzzle within it, allowing the viewer to make as many words as they can from white.
I wet felted some felt in natural colour which I then heavily embroidered to texturize and distort the felt to give organic forms with white threads. Working with water soluble fabric I embroidered many 3D forms as well as lace to embellish the felt. The lace and forms were then stitched to the felt, along with beaded wire, melted tyvek and hand embroidery stitches for more texture and dimension.
To create the word puzzle curtain rings were melted and then stitched before becoming the window frame for the word puzzle. The word ‘white’ is embroidered onto a background made entirely from stitched thread, which was attached to a handmade wooden spool to rotate, allowing different words to be created…quite literally ‘conversations in white’ in an anagram of white.
